Participate! VOTE
Are you aware that in the landslide re-election in 1984 of the president of the United States, the winner actually received the approval of only about 25 percent of the country’s eligible voters? One quarter!
Now, twenty years later, our voter participation levels are no better. We rank at the very bottom of the list of nations whose governments are determined by popular vote.
Is this any way to run a democracy … especially for a country that is working very hard to encourage democracy in emerging countries?
VoterDrive is an innovative way to strengthen communities and to involve citizens in our democratic process. The VoterDrive team will travel 10,000 miles across the U. S. this summer to encourage popular participation in the election process. Driving through big cities and small towns in an eye-catching, customized school bus, we will be registering new voters and handing out information showing the importance of voting in every election. Again, let me emphasize: this is totally NON-PARTISAN. There will be no electioneering.
The satellite-guided course we follow, specifically designed to take us to many communities otherwise ignored in the national political process, will actually spell out the word “VOTE,” making it the largest conceptual artwork in history. That will draw additional media attention, which will help further our cause.
VoterDrive has a very small operating budget, which comes largely from the fact that everyone working on the project is, and will remain, an unpaid volunteer. Just about all we need is the bus itself, fuel, food, a scanner to record the ID information for new voters to file their registration forms, postage for mailing registration forms, and occasional lodging for our team as we travel. Since the bus will serve as a mobile voter registration office, we’ll also need some basic office resources.
A donation of $250 will get us roughly 80 miles down the road into another small town in America spreading the word of Participation
VoterDrive is our way of doing something to reverse voter apathy (even cynicism) and supporting the great experiment we call democracy. I thank you in advance for your support of this project.
